Detailed description of Gatlinburg Municipal Golf Course

Gatlinburg Municipal Golf Course is a Public, 18 hole golf course located in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.

The course first opened for play in 1955. The course was designed by William B. Langford. In 1993 it underwent a major renovation by Bob Cupp & Associates of Atlanta.

Located just minutes from downtown Gatlinburg and at the edge of Dollywood, Pigeon Forge Tennessee, Gatlinburg Municipal Golf Course offers a unique golf course experience. This beautiful 18-hole course is home to the legendary hole #12, affectionately known as "Sky Hi". Now picture this: the 12th hole is 194 yards in length and drops 200 feet tee to green. It is considered one of golf's most dramatic holes.

Par for the course is 71. From the back tees, the course plays to 6,282 yards. From the forward tees, the course measures 4,710 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 3, a par-5 that plays to 529 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 8, a par-3 that plays to 144 yards from the back tees.

Watch out for # 7, a 468 yard par-4 challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole is # 10, a 509 yard par-5.

Down here on vacation with Family and Son-in-law Kevin wanted to tee it up someplace...so here we are. With four (4) tees to choose from, we choose the tips/Blues at 3,395yd/2,848yd / 70.0/120 for a of Par 37/34. The Front 9 opens #1 up with a downhill tee 395yd Par 4 to a uphill elevated green. The #2 Par 4 starts back uphill to a dogleg RH green that's 412yds away. The #3 a 529yd Par 5 runs you downhill all the way to a very large round green, so enjoy the trip. These Front 9 holes are mostly open so get that tee shot working straight before you get to the Back 9, trust me. Number 4 is one relaxing 469yd Par 5 so enjoy because #7 Hcp 1, is a long 468yd Par 4. The #9 is another friendly uphill 470yd Par 5 if you can hit the very elevated green on that 3rd shot. Back 9 starts out with a friendly winding downhill 470yd Par 5 and could be your last easy Par if you haven't got that straight tee shot working. (I didn't) The #12 Par 3 plays 194yd from the top with a plaque saying 165yds shot is required on this 100'+ drop to the large green. The photo is best taken from the green to the tee boxes to show the elevation. All I can say about the rest of the holes is "Tight Tee shots, Tight Fairways" and hit those target landing areas. The #16 is a short 327yd Par 4 but you must stay on the left side of fairway or the grassy RH ravine awaits your arrival. The #17 is a two (2) extra club uphill 231yd Par 3 Hcp 2, with my driver being short of course. Finishing hole #18 384yd Par 4 has the only water carry on your 2nd 150-160yd shot from the top of the hill, to the small green. This is a scenic course but the Back 9 2,848yds will challenge every tee shot and reward only the fairway shots. Kevin had his driver banging the center-cuts all day shooting 41/37 w/35putts and no real problems. I struggled off the tee with 46/47 w/36putts and hitting regulation only to 3 putt my pars away. Worth playing here as it is a very scenic layout.......from the fairway.

It was a beautiful winter day. The grass was with brown this time of year, but the course was still awesome.

After 40 years of playing golf, this remains one of my favorite courses. There is no better place as a backdrop for a golf course than the Smokey Mountains. The elevation changes and the breath-taking views, particularly in the fall, make this course a must-play when anywhere near the Smokies in East Tennessee. I travel to East Tennessee frequently and have always loved everything about this golf course. The 12th hole alone is worth the price of play.

I played the course 3 days in a row and the last day was Thanksgiving Day and the price went from $40 to $55 with no on course ranger to help speed play. If they are going to increase the price, they should at least try to maintain conditions as they were on other days.

The Smokey Mountains make for a great backdrop for this parkland beauty. Whenever I think of golf I think of the Sky High Par 3 to the valley green. Awesome memories and a day away from the tourist traps of the area.
